College Republican Carnage: 4 Clubs Down

A quick update to my previous post -two more clubs are officially out of the California College Republicans tonight due to the de-chartering of the clubs at UC-San Diego and UCLA. In protest of those votes, the chapters from Saddleback College and the University of California-Irvine voluntarily de-chartered and walked out of today's convention. This brings the total number of de-chartered clubs to four (UC-San Diego, UCLA, UC-Irvine, Saddleback).

The walkout was also joined by the College Republican chapter from Pasadena City College, as well as numerous delegates from UC-Santa Barbara.

Stay tuned - I'm nowhere near finished with this issue, and it looks like it's onl going to get juicier...

  1. Even if you factor in UCSD and UCLA for Red State, Antonpolous STILL gets 90% of the vote. RSR is a joke and you should stop defending their antics.

  3. Note to deleted commenter - personal attacks are being deleted on this thread after the fiascos from previous posts on this subject. Please feel free to re-post your comment without the attack on Miss Miller.

As for Mr. Scoreboard - I don't give a rip abot your petty little state board elections (except for the fact that you seem so pre-occupied by them that you are willing to de-charter dissenting clubs). I find it downright ridiculous that you are trying to attack me as an RSR schill when I said absolutely nothing about RSR, Adam Ellison, Micheal Antonopolous, or any of the other players in a race that I consider almost meaningless. Did you even read the post?

All I care about is the corrupt de-chartering of clubs - neither RSR or Revolutionize are worth my time, so please stop ranting about them as if I care.

  4. How is UCLA missing the chartering deadline corrupt? How is Irvine and Saddleback walking out corrupt? Are you aware that the ccr excomm has made 3 separate attempts to work out a compromise between the two UCSD clubs that would have given each club voting rights at convention? If the ex comm was simply interested in de-chartering clubs in the interest of maintaining power, why would they offer a 50/50 vote split compromise for the clubs to agree upon? You are perpetuating inaccurate information. If you're deleting personal attacks, perhaps you should delete your own post attacking the ccr ex comm.As for this getting "juicier" i know EXACTLY what you think you know, it's hardly juicy when you know the full story. More inaccurate attacks to get hits on your blog.

  5. Wow...that's really an incredibly dense comment. Of course the walkouts weren't corrupt - they were a reaction to corruption. The corrupt angle of UCLA was the denial of a roll call vote despite a voice vote that was clearly in doubt (and the fact that UCLA had been told that the deadline would be extended for them just like is was for other schools).

And finally, the big question on UCSD - yes I am aware of the pathertic "reconciliation" attempts made by the state committee. For one, the teerms were ridiculous - as they wanted to give only half the delegates back as a way to get the bank fraud investigation dropped. Secondly, no settlement that gave votes to the so-called "Triton College Republicans" would be fair in my opinion. The entire existence of that group is based on corruption and fraud, and to give them votes would be to lend them legitimacy.

In my opinion, the ONLY fair outcome to this would be the rechartering of the UCSD Republicans with Inez Feltscher as the sole chairwoman, coupled with the outright censure and elimination of the "Triton College Republicans" (and possibly the impeachment of several state board members, namely Megan Rodriguez).

  6. Adam, I find it funny that you're making such steadfast demands (like the ones at the end of your latest comment) while clearly having no first-hand knowledge of the situation at hand. Way to boost your own credibility.

For the record, the voice vote wasn't close - RSR supporters were outnumbered 8-1 in delegate votes. A roll call would have been useless as half of RSR's supporters walked out immediately after losing the voice vote.

  7. UCLA did not miss the deadline. The call to convention states that chartering is due by 10:30 AM Sunday morning at Convention which is supposed the start time for the last ex-com meeting. The only other deadline is supposed to be an email deadline. So if you want to email your charter in you need to do so by a different time. In this case they pushed the email deadline back so they could take care of their schools as well as try to steel some of RSRs schools. In addition they moved up the chartering deadline and the last ex-com meeting to 9 PM Friday night. This violation was announced at 8 PM on friday night. This was intended to hurt CR clubs who did not support the establishment. At the last ex-com meeting it was decided that there would not be an audit. That means that the ex-com thought it was okay to accept whatever numbers they wanted. In other words they were going to lie by inflating the number of CRs they have in their clubs. This is not fair to those playing by the rules. This is just a small fraction of what's wrong with CCRs leadership.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes, Revolutionize CCR would have won regardless of how UCLA and UCSD's chartering decisions were made. That's exactly why the ExComm's actions are indefensible.

You see, if doing the right thing endangers your election chances, you have a tough decision to make. You basically have a limited amount of "political capital" to get these things done, and to be an effective public servant you need to allocate this capital efficiently among the opportunities available to you. Sadly, just because something is right does not mean you can afford to do it, at least in the short term.

But the ExComm could have corrected their unconstitutional UCSD decision without endangering their election chances by more than 1%, if that! Or they could have presented arguments why their decision was not in fact unconstitutional (I cannot fathom what they might be, but I'm not omniscient and I acknowledge the possibility that such arguments may exist). Either of those actions would have gotten me to support them! But no, they simply asserted the authority to make whatever wrong decision they wanted to and force us to live by it, with no possibility of reevaluation. They had the opportunity to do a fairly major right thing with a minimal, probably negative actually, expenditure of their political capital; and they didn't do it. Such a pathologically risk-averse group might be okay for the party in a strongly majority Republican state. But they have no place in California in 2009.

  10. Adam,

Just a question. Are you just getting your information for your blogging from members and officers of the clubs that were on the RSR slate and/or clubs that walked out of the election such as UCSD? If so, I would like to see more emphasis and information from the other side, in this case RevCCR and the CCR ExComm. Please bring this side more into the light and in a fair way so people here can make an educated opinion and not be influenced by emotion and possible erroneous information.

  14. Get over yourself. No one cares about your "self-professed" possible support of Rev CCR (Didn't I see you in a RSR shirt at the convention?).

Yes you did see me in an RSR shirt. After Antonopoulos and the rest of the ExComm demonstrated total disinterest in reversing their mistake.

No need to bold it. Your one vote wouldn't have even made a difference.

You're absolutely correct that my vote was of no consequence. I said as such myself when I sent a message to Donnellan. Now, whether my support or opposition is of no consequence... that's another question entirely. We will see over the coming months and maybe years what the answer to that question is.

Just move on already. You grad students should know better than to bicker on some random blog of little importance. Grow up.

I may very well end up taking the course of action you suggest. But the reason would be me judging the Republican cause in California to be either hopeless or pointless. If I do "move on", while you remain active in Republican politics here, you better hope that my judgment is off.

  15. A few notes:

    1) Where I get my info is none of anyone's business.

    2) I do not take orders as to which side of what issue gets coverage here.

    3) I do not claim to be a journalist - I am an opinion writer - I have no obligations to air equal content.

    4) The other side has no trouble getting their info out - they have the Dana Report schilling for them (and slamming me for daring to question them)

    5) The people who disagree with me have been extremely vicious and obnoxious in attacking me since I have brought this issue up. Therefore, I have no desire to talk to any of them at this point.

In conclusion, this is my blog. I have the right to take a side on any issue I want and to decide the content here. I'm very careful with the information I put out, and I don't put out anything that I can't defend with fact. Beyond that, I am obligated to do nothing, nor am I violating any ethical standards whatsoever. If you disagree with that statement, I would be more than happy to direct you to numerous groups which support the fairness doctrine - they'd be more than happy to have you.

If the people I have labeled corrupt wish to air their opinions, there are plenty of forums - but based on everything I have seen so far, I am confident in what I have written and I will not be changing my opinion in order to accomodate anyone's hurt feelings.

  19. UCSB does not and will not stand for this corrupt mess that is CCR. Taking the fact that we did not endorse either slate, I hope our club pulls our charter with CCR because I, nor my club, want to be part of such a shady, corrupt organization that disenfranchizes clubs that happen to disagree with their political agenda.

I thought that as Republicans we were better than this.

  20. O no we lost Saddleback and UCI?! Its gonna hurt not having their 0 combined volunteers at GOTV's in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  21. anonymous,

Again your not getting the picture! UCI and Saddleback did the right thing. This is beyond two schools de-chartering. Its about principles and about justice.

I commend them on doing what was right. CCR purposely denied voices, after stating they would hear them. They promised someone that she could speak and vote and later denied both of them. As for the voting I have a PERSONAL email from MATTHEW DONNELLAN himself stating that the individual would be able to vote!

This is about lies, embezzlement, and about pure corruption.

I am forever gone from CCR, I refuse to have my future kids be involved in this organization. No one that I know will be involved down the road. What they stand for is not the Conservative movement, its not the beliefs of the constitution. Our founding fathers would be disgusted with this.

I will fight, I will win, and the party will remain uncorrupted, because of the individuals that are willing to save it. The people that walked out yesterday and are ashamed of this organization will go far in life and live it with clear consciences.

I AM PROUD TO BE A PART OF THE REAL REVOLUTION!
revolutionize go ahead and suppress the voices, and be England. Why we stand up and fight for a free nation under god!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Donellon was correct in saying that individual delegates could vote! In fact, I even remember him adjusting his own schools voting when two of his delegates had to leave to catch their flight. Didn't you wonder why Falicia got less votes that Michael, I mean the totals that is. All anyone needed to do was call out "row call" for a row call vote of each individual delegate from that school for any school, but no one did...

  23. "At the last ex-com meeting it was decided that there would not be an audit. That means that the ex-com thought it was okay to accept whatever numbers they wanted."

I thought that the auditing bylaws said that only schools who submitted after the deadline would be audited, meaning that only Loyola (3 votes) and Pasadena (4 votes) would have been audited. Aren't you arguing anyway that UCLA's chartering should have been accepted at 10:30AM on Sunday? How would you audit a list in 30 seconds before voting? Sounds to me like UCLA is pissed they didn't get to cheat the system by slipping past an audit...

    ReplyDelete
  24. From The Call To Convention:

"To vote your club must be chartered and you must be a designated delegate of your club. To charter your club must send in the following items to ----, at ----, no later than Thursday, March 26"

If there was some issues with the wording over executive board, exectuive committee, board of directors, or general board, I am sure that UCLA or any school in question would have contacted someone about their issues...right?

  25. Silence Dogood,

I am going to switch sides briefly here.

GOTV may be grunt work, but it's an essential component of electoral success. While I tend to agree with Red State Rising's ideals, I do NOT condone their weak logistics, and I encourage you to continue pushing them to improve their ground game (though more civility would be nice).

Also, "Silence Dogood", if you're proud to be a part of the real revolution, I recommend that you attach your real name in some manner to your posts. As Republicans, we believe in accountability. (Yeah, we also believe in free speech, and there are circumstances under which that's only realistic in combination with anonymity or pseudonymity. But this discussion is not such a case.)

With all that said... GOTV is not the end-all and be-all of the conservative cause. It's at least as important to figure out what we should actually stand for, live by it, and evangelize effectively. Revolutionize CCR has a lot to learn about such matters.

  30. I'm not stating that it was metaphorical.

the crunch wrap supreme has nacho cheese, flour and corn tortilla, with beef and beans, with tomatoes, lettuce, and sour cream. Its then grilled to perfection.

I say dont eat just admire it!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. See that's why I tell people about the shredded cheese. Most people think you can only get nacho cheese. Also, you can get chicken instead of beef.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You can substitute beans for the meat, also. I did it once...But if you do that, you have to devour it before it gets all soggy, so don't order it to go if you want to do that. Shredded cheese is soo much better with the crunchwrap.

  33. 4 Clubs down, 2 way upApril 28, 2009 at 10:40 AM

So the southern region lost UCI, Saddleback, UCLA and halfway lost UCSD...how about what I believe to be the 2 fastest growing clubs in the Southern Region? Between SDSU and San Marcos the Southern Region has gained over 1000 members within in the past year on those 2 campuses alone.

SDSU and San Marcos are for the most part start-up clubs but both have long, active and young membership rosters. They both stay out of the drama that benefits no one and could have as many as 130 combined votes at convention next year. You wonder why RSR wasn't legit, they failed to EVER even contact the chair at the club with the largest amount of votes, SDSU.

  39. To those who said that Saddleback turned out 0 volunteers to GOTV, I'm not at all angry you stated that, or even insulted...I just want to clarify something about that so that you aren't frustrated with Saddleback's "inactivity"...we were not a club at that point...we are pretty new. So there was no way to turn out any volunteers from our non-existant club at that point. But don't worry, we're not lazy. :)
ok, I'm going to go get some Mexican food now that you all are talking about it so much!

    ReplyDelete

  41. There were contacts given for Saddleback, UCLA and UCI for GOTV and they produced no one, there was a total of around 70 volunteers and 47 of them came from San Diego State

    ReplyDelete
  42. awww yes gotv from la to San Diego is a far drive, especially if your in school. also Taylor already stated that their club wasn't up during the last election.

can you please read and then absorb the materials?

In all honesty I barely did GOTV because of work and my internship which is far more important than GOTV. I did however do GOTV on voting day and enjoyed it, just wish I had a partner that day :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have and can read and absorb hence my statement that there was contact information available for Saddleback, didn't say they were a legitimate club but I know for a fact that people from Saddleback were contacted.

San Diego is not a far drive, there was plenty of room in the Town & Country had their been people to actually step up and fill it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. There was a previous Saddleback club not that was not chartered with CCR that dissolved AFTER the election. That club was not associated with my club. We started the Saddleback College Republicans in late Feb. and chartered with CCR. There is no connection between our club and the previous republican club that dissolved after the election. So if you got ahold of someone, it wasn't associated with our club. We are literally a few months old. I'm pretty sure the last republican club at Saddleback was under the name Saddleback Young Republicans when you tried to get ahold of them. We are called College Republicans of Saddleback College.

Please, make sure you cover all bases before defaming our club's name. That would be much appreciated. Thank you.
    -Taylor

    ReplyDelete
  45. All I know is that I made calls to the clubs chartered at the time with CCR at Saddleback, UCI, Chapman, Redlands, UCLA, and CLU and they produced a total of 0. I really do not remember the names of the contacts at Saddleback or Chapman but UCI promised that they would produce 6 for GOTV and were a major disappointment.

If you were not involved at all with the CR's at that point then I apologize I do not recall the names I was given for Saddleback either but turning out a total of 70 volunteers and having 47 of them come from one school is inexcusable and is a ding to the legitimacy of College Republicans.

San Diego State is for all intents and purposes a startup club as well, 10 months ago we had to coax people into being put on our membership roster so we could have 5 officers and charter with the school administration and we are now the largest chapter in the state with over 630. To finish, speaking of ignorance on this very blog the statement 'the southern region only has 2 legitimate clubs, San Marcos and UCR,' was posted post convention, we beg to differ.

    ReplyDelete
  46. San Diego State has the most legit club anyway. All you haters can keep crying over your CR drama while we keep recruiting people who want to have fun, volunteer, and be a part of the BEST LOOKING club in the state as well. I think that everyone here who is complaining about everything should just suck it up and seal fight it out.. then we will see who the best CR club really is!

    ReplyDelete
  47. As a CR from SDSU I can say no one club has done more to get least respect. We boast the largest roster in the state, on a campus that political apathy is rampant. Nevertheless, we persevered and have developed probably the closest, most unified rank of any club.

The level of commitment form our members never ceases to amaze, and was shown true during GOTV last year. We mobilized when other some other campuses failed to even send a representative. This frustrates me simply because CRs is all about actively getting involved in local politics. We had several hotly contested seats and I guess some clubs (who shall go unnamed) felt that the drive was just too far to help spread conservative ideals. Just think what a few more able-bodied CRs could have done...

Well my friends, no distance should be too far. We drove all the way to S.F. for convention, isn't an election a bit more important?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yeah, not only were our shirts awesome, we did not whine and drone on about giving a "voice" over and over again. Honestly, I didnt vote for UCSD/UCLA because they just came off as a bunch of whimpering pansies that I would rather not be associated with, SDSU FTW!

    ReplyDelete
  50. LA to San Diego = a far drive? For a weekend of volunteering to help fellow republicans in your state and for a free stay in a hotel? I don't think so. Distance is no excuse, as it was stated above... San Diego State had the furthest drive up to San Francisco and STILL came up with 27 CRs. Especially for a weekend very close to finals time and each of us paying for most of the cost of the entire trip ourselves... it is just a little sad that some are complaining about coming down for GOTV. If any club here is full of motivated and dedicated individuals, it is definitely San Diego State and we deserve more respect and recognition than we are getting!

    ReplyDelete
  51. this is the most pointless and juvenile fight I have ever seen. And I am appalled that this fight is between college REPUBLICANS! Honestly, i would expect this BS from the Dems, but COME ON CR'S! Can't we just all get along and unite for the greater cause of spreading conservative ideals?!
On a lighter note, SDSU Cr's are the most legit club. Obviously the last like 12 posts were from sdsu which just goes to show how dedicated they are to college republicans. Not to mention the SDSU Cr's have had about 10 post convention parties just to continue on the amazing time they had at convention. I am truly sorry for all of you butt hurt whiners who arent having nearly as fun as we are....

  53. I agree with the Constitution. And that isn't just because i'm a recovering Ron Paul Revolutionary and it's pretty much our bible...

Seriously, we live in a state where the party of Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln is a dying breed. To fight amongst ourselves is like painting targets on our backs and letting the liberals fire at will. We're better than this. The convention in S.F should have been a symbolic moment, but instead is a sad testament to how far we've fallen.

I look at whats going on in San Diego, specifically SDSU CR's, and have hope for tomorrow. Here is a group that whole-heartedly believes in the mission, and knows how to have a good time while we're at it! The president and VP have gone to great lengths to bring in legit freshman and develop them into future leaders. I see the 600+ members as only the beginning. Other clubs would do well to follow our lead. Maybe the result could help paint the California map a little more red next year.

    Vive le Republican Revolution!
